Managing People
Prof. John McClendon
Required Core Course
Fall -- 1 credit
Managing People emphasizes how the success of any organization depends on the effective management of its employees. By examining firm-level case studies that involve contemporary people management issues, we illustrate how a strategic approach to managing human resources influences the development of an organization´s culture and, ultimately, how this plays a key role in the organization´s cost, quality, productivity, and customer service. In doing so, we identify people system practices that are essential to achieving sustainable competitive advantage and in making a good organization great. With respect to specific topics, the course evolves around the analysis and discussion of an array of people management strategic issues, including: compensation, staffing, labor-management relations, managing people systems in the global context, safety, performance management, training, and outsourcing.
