Particularly in the last decade or two, technological progress has led to the emergence of various new business models in many different industries. Amazon.com, ebay and Cisco Systems are only three well-known examples of this trend. The central aim of this course is to explore some of these business models and to understand how they impact the industry environment as well as how they change internal management requirements.
Topics to be discussed are the following:
1. Business Models - some fundamental issues
2. Technological changes and globalization as the basis for the emergence of new business models
3. New business models - a systematic overview
4. Impact of new business models on industry structure and behavior
5. Management of new business models - requirements for organizational design and management systems
The course provides the analytic and conceptual foundations for understanding the impact of new business models, using a combination of lectures, discussions and case studies. Thus, for the class to work well, all students are expected to arrive in class, having read the assigned cases and to be prepared to offer and defend their analysis and recommendations.
